On 25 May 825, Emperor Lothair I promulgated the capitulary of Corteolona which established the imperial schools. In addition to Pavia, the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, Florence also had the school of law, rhetoric and liberal arts, inheriting the tradition of the school of law, founded by the Roman emperor Theodosius I; the students of the then Carolingian Tuscia depended on the Florence headquarters.
The university of Florence originates from the Studium Generale established thanks to a resolution of the Florentine Republic in 1321. In its early days, disciplines such as civil and canon jurisprudence, literature and medicine were taught at the studium ; however in 1324, after only three years, it was forced to cease its activities. The teachings resumed in 1349, thanks to the intercession of Pope Clement VI, who granted the studium the possibility of awarding regular diplomas (privilea maxima), as well as establishing the first theology faculty in Italy.
In 1364, during the reign of Emperor Charles IV, the Florentine university became an imperial university, which however faced a further interruption of its teaching activities in the following years. In 1387 new statutes were promulgated: the first Greek chair in Europe was established and the development of medicine was promoted thanks to a municipal directive which provided for the granting of two cadavers for anatomical studies.
