The Universität zu Köln is a scientific university in Cologne with the range of subjects of a comprehensive university, order Universität zu Köln urkunde certificate. It was founded in 1919 as the second university in the Weimar Republic (after the University of Hamburg ). After the loss of the Kaiser Wilhelm University in Strasbourg as a result of the end of the First World War, it was intended to continue its tradition and “strengthen the German position on the Rhine”.
With over 44,500 students in the winter semester of 2023/24, it is one of the largest in-person universities in Germany. From 2012 to 2019 it held excellence status as part of the third excellence initiative for university funding.
The Rectorate runs the university. It consists of the rector as chairman ( Joybrato Mukherjee ), six vice-rectors and the chancellor ( Karsten Gerlof ). The Rectorate is elected by the university election assembly, in which the Senate and the University Council have equal voting weight; the first term of office is at least six years and subsequent terms of office are at least four years. The Rector is chairman of the Rectorate and the Senate of the university.
