The RH was founded in 1971 and has its origins in the Rhenish Engineering School for Civil and Mechanical Engineering Cologne (RIBM), which was founded by Gottfried Päffgen in 1958 and state-recognized in 1966.
At the time the higher vocational schools were converted into technical colleges, the city of Cologne was unable to offer its own mechanical engineering courses. However, since it wanted to cover the full range of subjects intended for universities of applied sciences, the RIBM was supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the conversion so that the university framework law at the time could be fulfilled.
